Breast cancer touches millions of lives around the world. For some, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to celebrate being cancer-free. For others, it brings back hard memories or reminds them of challenges they are going through. No matter the experience, this month is about hope, support, and coming together.
There is good news. Since 1989, deaths from breast cancer in the United States have dropped by 44%. This is because more people have more breast cancer information, more people are getting screened, and treatments have improved. That shows how powerful awareness and action can be.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink—it is a call to take meaningful action. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:
Remember, medical care and support are just as important as knowing about breast cancer—get screened early and keep up with recommended care.
There are programs available to help. For example, at the TSU Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Center, we offer free mammograms, education, and support services for women who may not have insurance in the Houston area. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program helps underserved women get screenings and follow-up care. There is also FreeMammograms.org, which helps people find free screening services across the country.
If you or someone you know is facing breast cancer, you are not alone. There are people, programs, and communities ready to support you. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s support each other, encourage regular screenings, and work together for a healthier future for us all.
