Back-to-School, Back-to-You: A Reminder to Care for Yourself

As kids head back to school this August, and schedules get busier, many women and caregivers focus on everyone else’s needs while putting their own health last. Back-to-school season is a great time to focus on your health and well-being too.

Preventive care helps catch problems early, sometimes before symptoms even appear. Simple check-ups like annual wellness visits, blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, cervical cancer screenings, and mammograms can help you stay healthy long-term.

Healthy daily habits also make a big difference. Busy schedules, stress, and lack of sleep can affect physical and emotional health. The National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Heart Association encourage healthy habits like getting good sleep, managing stress, healthy eating, and staying active to help lower the risk of some chronic diseases and cancers.¹ 2 3

Breast health is especially important. Regular screening mammograms can help detect breast cancer early, when treatment may work best. Women should speak with their doctor or health care provider about recommended screenings and preventive care options.

As families prepare for a new school year, women across Texas should remember: Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of everyone else.

Texas Southern University’s Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Center offers annual screening mammograms, breast health education, and support services for eligible women in Texas. To learn more, call 713-313-5781.
